Off to the Azores

Europe’s Hawaii, here we come!

After an exhausting three days, we finally slept in a real bed last night, and even though the AC didn’t work, it was still the best part of our vacation so far! Our plane from Paris was delayed by an hour or so but eventually we boarded and I was able to sleep for a couple hours. We were served water and sandwiches (olive and tomato for me, chicken for Ev). Touching down in Lisbon was a huge relief! We made it! Then… an hour long wait for an Uber that didn’t come to the correct pick-up spot (repeatedly), followed by a 45-60 minute drive to our hotel (it was rush hour, and when I mapped it at 9pm ET it was the middle of the night in Lisbon so no traffic, oops). The woman at the front desk was very nice and our room was spacious and cute. We dropped our luggage and headed for food!

Ev had scouted a vegan place so we decided to check it out, Plant Base. We split mac & cheese and burgers and drank beer (Sagres) and a long island! The streets here are wild, they’re super narrow, it’s very hilly, and the sidewalks are made from stone (laid by hand!) so they’re very pretty, but very uneven!

We were absolutely exhausted, so we walked back to the hotel, showered, and slept. Early wake up call today at 0400 to get back to the airport - we were supposed to spend a couple days in Lisbon but because of all of the flight troubles we are basically in and out. This morning we’re flying TAP Air Portugal to Ponta Delgada airport on Sao Miguel island (“the green island”), the largest island of the Azores. It’s about a 2.5 hour flight, and then we’re renting a car and driving about an hour along the coast to our first resort hotel, Octant Furnas!

Bom dia!
