Last day! Sad it’s over but ready to go home, you know the drill. I also honestly want to be done flying for a while but we’ve got back to back to back trips coming up the rest of the year! They will all be amazing though so it’ll be worth it!
Yesterday we had tickets to Belem Tower at 1300 so we went to that area of Lisbon after breakfast and saw the outside of the Jerónimos Monastery and the gardens nearby. Next we walked to the Monument of Discoveries, a gigantic monument featuring Henry the Navigator (who didn’t sail), Vasco de Gama, and several others. It was very imposing and not too expensive to go to the top but we had tickets to the tower so we passed. We walked around the tower and then went in for our time slot - unfortunately the roof was closed so we were unable to go to the top - I wish I had known before I bought the tickets but I guess they do that on purpose.
You can’t visit this area without trying a pastel de nata from where they originated - Pasteis de Belem; it’s a portuguese egg custard tart! They were the best ones we’ve had and we topped them off with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Yum!
We took an Uber to Wizards of the Toast! A board game cafe Evan found near the aquarium - we didn’t look at the hours so we missed it Tuesday but it was open Wednesday so we got some food & drinks and played Azul mini! We had a hard time figuring out the scoring and a nice man noticed and helped us. We also went to the board game store affiliated with the cafe called Versus and looked over their games.
Our last destination was to St. George Castle (Castelo de Sao Jorge) in/near the Alfama neighborhood of Lisbon. The opening hours were a little confusing and we missed the last guided tour but we climbed around the ruins and watched the sunset, and then learned that peacocks sleep in trees, and boy did we find that tree! It was really fun to see and hear them getting ready for bed. We visited the archealogical site and unfortunately the museum was closed for “improvement works in the sanitary facilities” so we didn;t see that either but we still had a good time!
We took a long walk through Alfama back to our hotel from the castle and we didn’t run into any live fado music, it was a wednesday after all, but we were exhausted anyway and even fell asleep without dinner!
Now we’re mid-flight home, delayed getting out by about 15 minutes but we boarded on the tarmac which, in my experience, was strange for such a big flight! We’re looking forward to watching spooky movies on the couch with pizza before we have to get back to reality tomorrow (Friday).
Cheers to the honeymoon of the rest of our lives! <3
